In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) by NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, the party said Marinos died in the early hours of Tuesday morning, shortly after returning to Uganda from exile.

According to Bobi Wine, Marinos was abducted on March 30, 2022, in Mbuya, Kampala, by operatives linked to the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI). She was allegedly tortured and raped while in detention. Her ordeal, he claimed, began after she was accused of playing his music on loudspeakers.

“Her crime? Playing Bobi Wine’s music on loudspeakers!” Kyagulanyi wrote, adding that when Marinos went public with her experience, she began receiving death threats.

He further alleged that her home was raided at night by unknown people, prompting her to flee to Nairobi, Kenya, where she initially lived in hiding before seeking protection in a UNHCR refugee camp.

While in exile, Marinos’ health deteriorated. Bobi Wine said she contracted HIV/AIDS as a result of the sexual assault during her detention and later developed other illnesses. Despite receiving medical support, her condition worsened last year.

“Because of the loneliness and other conditions in the refugee camp, she returned to Uganda a few weeks back to get better treatment in the presence of her family,” Kyagulanyi noted.

Marinos passed away at 1:30 am on Tuesday, according to NUP.

Her death has reignited opposition criticism of the government’s alleged use of abductions, torture, and intimidation against dissenting voices.

“Marinos joins hundreds of other victims of the Museveni regime of blood and terror,” Kyagulanyi said. “The struggle for freedom and democracy in Uganda is poorer without you, but the evil regime will never have the last laugh.”

The government has repeatedly denied accusations of systematic torture and abductions of opposition supporters, insisting that security operations are conducted within the law.
