“We call for calmness in areas where primaries are going to be held,” Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) spokesperson Arach Oyat Sharon has appealed, urging party members and supporters to exercise restraint and discipline as the party heads into its internal elections.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, Arach emphasized that the upcoming primaries will be conducted under strict principles of fairness, transparency, and peaceful participation, particularly in constituencies expected to witness stiff competition.

The UPC has scheduled its party primaries in two key phases:
- August 16, 2025: Primaries for Members of Parliament, LCV Chairpersons, City Mayors, City Division Mayors, and Municipal Mayors.
- August 18, 2025: Elections for District Councillors, City Division Councillors, Municipal/Division Councillors, Sub County/Division Chairpersons, and Sub County Councillors.
In a notable shift aimed at deepening grassroots participation, the party announced that village branch executives will be included in the electoral colleges at parish, sub-county, constituency, and district levels. This is by Executive Order No. 001/2025 issued by UPC President Hon. Jimmy Akena.
According to the Party Electoral Commission (PEC), some aspirants have already secured their candidacies unopposed, and their official announcement will be made at a later date.
The UPC, once Uganda’s post-independence ruling party, is aiming to reclaim political ground by reviving internal structures and promoting inclusive decision-making. The party believes that orderly and credible primaries are vital to projecting unity and readiness ahead of the 2026 general elections.
“The Party assures all aspiring candidates that the primaries are going to be peaceful, transparent, free, and fair,” Arach concluded.
