Ahead of the upcoming TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 matches, the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has released a comprehensive traffic management plan aimed at easing congestion and ensuring the smooth movement of teams, officials, and guests around key venues in Kampala and surrounding areas.
According to the police, traffic diversions will be activated from 12:00 PM on match days, but only if the situation demands. The plan includes specific routes for diverting both trucks and general vehicles, as well as access restrictions and special parking guidelines for VIPs and the general public.
Truck Diversions:
To reduce traffic congestion on major highways during the tournament, heavy trucks will be rerouted through the following alternative routes:
- Kalerwe Interchange to Gayaza–Kalagi–Mukono
- Mukono to Kalagi–Gayaza–Kalerwe Interchange
General Vehicle Diversions:
Light vehicles will also face diversions as part of the traffic control measures:
- Naalya Interchange traffic will be redirected through Kyaliwajjala–Ssonde–Seeta
- Seeta-bound traffic will pass via Ssonde–Namugongo–Kyaliwajjala–Naalya Interchange
- Traffic from Bweyogerere will be diverted to Jokas Hotel–Kinawataka Road
Restricted Zones & Pedestrian Access:
- A cutoff point will be enforced at Hared Petrol Station on Kinawataka Road, denying access to Kireka Trading Center.
- The stretch from Kireka–Nasanga Junction to Jokas Hotel Road will be restricted to pedestrians only.
Parking at Mandela National Stadium:
Parking will be limited at the Southern Playground Wing, and only vehicles with VIP accreditation stickers will be allowed entry. The police have urged members of the public attending the matches to make alternative parking arrangements away from the stadium.
Security & Public Advisory:
The Uganda Police Force has assured the public of adequate deployment of traffic officers along all designated routes and stadium entry points. Officers will guide vehicles, enforce diversions, and assist VIP movements.
“We encourage all road users to cooperate with officers, plan ahead, and strictly follow the guidelines provided. Our aim is to ensure a smooth, safe, and successful hosting of CHAN 2024,” said a statement from the Traffic Directorate.
The directive is part of broader national efforts to deliver a secure and seamless experience for both local and international guests during the prestigious continental tournament.
