According to preliminary findings by the traffic police, the accident involved a Toyota HiAce van registration number UA 889AM and a pedestrian. The driver, who was reportedly speeding, knocked down a pedestrian attempting to cross the road, killing them instantly.
Police say the impact caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which veered off the road, struck the bridge railing, and plunged into the River Malaba beneath the bridge.
Three passengers aboard the van died on the spot while 13 others, including the driver, sustained various degrees of injuries. All injured victims were rushed to Tororo General Hospital for emergency medical treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were conveyed to the hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations.
The wreckage of the vehicle was later recovered and towed to Busia Police Station as investigations into the exact cause of the crash continue.
Authorities have since issued a public safety appeal to motorists, urging strict observance of speed limits and caution when approaching pedestrian crossings or densely populated areas.
“We urge all motorists to strictly observe speed limits and yield to pedestrians, particularly in busy areas, to prevent such tragic incidents,” said police in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The identity of the deceased and injured has not yet been made public as authorities notify the next of kin.
