Munyagwa Pledges to Defend Rights of Ordinary Ugandans as He Takes Over Common Man’s Party

Former Kawempe South MP Mubarak Munyagwa has pledged to champion the rights of ordinary Ugandans as he assumed leadership of the newly rebranded Common Man’s Party (CMP), formerly the Uganda Economic Party.

Munyagwa, who was sworn in on Tuesday 15th July as party president, promised to revive the party’s mission of advocating for equality and justice for the marginalized. He said CMP would serve as a platform to restore the dignity of Ugandans left behind by what he called “elitist politics.”

“History has a notorious habit of repeating itself. This conclave here has anointed me to liberate the common man,” Munyagwa declared in his speech, likening his leadership to biblical Moses leading Israelites to the promised land.

The former legislator, known for his outspoken nature, emphasized that his 25-year involvement in political activism has always been centered on the welfare of ordinary citizens. “I have been in the trenches for more than half of my life, fighting for the liberation of the common man,” he said, vowing to continue that struggle under CMP.

The party, first registered in 2004, had been largely dormant but is now repositioning ahead of the 2026 General Election. Officials revealed that the gazetting process for its new name is ongoing.

Munyagwa also dismissed critics who question his ability to lead, saying his resilience and confidence would steer the party toward becoming a strong alternative voice. “We are opening a new chapter in history. The typist may delay us, but the script is already written,” he said.

CMP joins a growing list of political outfits preparing to contest the 2026 elections amid rising calls for change and inclusivity in Uganda’s political landscape.
