According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, officers chased the suspects as they fled in the direction of Bugolobi. During the pursuit, one of the robbers, identified as Farouk Matovu, was apprehended by police.
His accomplice, however, attempted to flee while firing gunshots into the air. Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers guarding a residence in Bugolobi intercepted him and shot him dead when he refused to surrender. A rifle fitted with two magazines was recovered from the deceased.
Police are now conducting further investigations to determine the amount of money stolen in the botched heist.
The incident adds to a growing list of attacks on mobile money agents across the country, sparking renewed calls for enhanced security and protection for operators within the financial services sector.
Meanwhile, in a separate operation, Wandegeya Police Division has arrested 47 suspects during an intelligence-led crackdown on criminal activity in zones including Kafero, Lower Nsooba, Kalerwe, and Katanga.
“The suspects were charged with possession of narcotic drugs,” said Onyango. “The exercise aimed to boost community safety and was conducted with professionalism and discipline.”
