Kyambogo University Dismisses NUP Student Leader Over Disciplinary Violations

Kyambogo University has dismissed Akiso Benjamin, the university’s current guild president a known student leader affiliated with the National Unity Platform (NUP), over allegations of breaching university regulations including breach of peace, mounting unauthorized roadblocks, and insubordination.

In a dismissal letter dated July 3, 2025, signed by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Eli Katunguka-Rwakishaya, the university cited Akiso’s conduct as a violation of the Kyambogo University Students’ Regulations of 2003, as amended in 2016. His actions were reviewed by the Students’ Affairs and Welfare Committee, which recommended immediate dismissal.

The University Council, during its 111th meeting on June 27, endorsed the committee’s recommendation and officially expelled Akiso under Regulation 37(m) of the student code.

Akiso, who has been a vocal figure in student activism and a prominent NUP mobilizer on campus, was accused of organizing roadblocks and demonstrating without clearance, actions deemed a threat to campus peace and a challenge to university authority.

In addition to the dismissal, the university has barred him from attending any academic or extracurricular activities, using university facilities, or representing the Students’ Guild or Kyambogo University in any capacity.

“This is therefore to notify you of the University Council’s decision dismissing you from Kyambogo University with immediate effect,” the letter read.

The development has sparked debate among student circles, particularly within opposition-leaning groups, who view the dismissal as politically motivated. However, the university maintains that the decision was based solely on disciplinary grounds.

The letter has been copied to key university offices including the Deputy Vice Chancellors, Academic Registrar, Dean of Students, and University Bursar, signifying a formal and final decision on the matter.
