Besigye to Deliver Keynote Address from Prison at PFF Inauguration

Dr. Kizza Besigye will deliver the keynote address from Luzira Prison during the official inauguration of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) scheduled for Tuesday, July 8.

This was announced by the party’s interim spokesperson, Hon. Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, during a press briefing at the PFF Secretariat on Katonga Road on Monday.

“For the first time, a prisoner will address a national delegates’ conference,” Ssemujju said. “Dr. Besigye will speak to over 1,000 invited delegates as we officially launch the PFF and present our leadership and agenda to the country.”

Besigye, who has now spent over 220 days in detention, was arrested in November 2024 and initially charged in a military court before being transferred to the High Court following a Supreme Court ruling that civilians should not be tried by military tribunals.

Ssemujju revealed that Besigye has applied for mandatory bail, having exceeded the 180 days allowed under the Constitution. He warned that if the High Court does not fix the hearing date within one week, party supporters will stage a protest at the court.

The PFF inauguration will also include the presentation and swearing-in of the party’s leadership, with regional and district structures to follow. The event doubles as the party’s first national delegates’ conference.

Besigye remains the party’s most prominent figure and a symbol of its opposition to President Museveni’s government. Despite his imprisonment, Ssemujju said he remains strong and committed to the struggle for change.
