Soldiers of the Uganda Peoples’ Defense Forces (UPDF) have been urged to adopt a culture of saving and make informed financial decisions to secure their future and enhance mission readiness.
The call was made during a financial sensitization session held at the 5 Infantry Division headquarters in Pader District, led by a delegation from Wazalendo Savings and Credit Cooperative Organization (WSACCO) based in Kampala.

Speaking at the session, Col David Opeero, Deputy Commander of the 5 Infantry Division, emphasized that financial discipline is crucial to a soldier’s welfare and operational efficiency.
“Managing your finances well helps you concentrate on your duties without unnecessary worries. It supports your long-term welfare and mission readiness,” said Col Opeero.
He encouraged soldiers to save regularly, plan for retirement, secure their children’s education, and prepare for life transitions such as deployments and relocations.
WSACCO’s Director of Finance, Lt Col Peter Tuharwe, highlighted the risks of poorly managed business ventures, especially for soldiers whose duties require frequent movement. He noted that the tendency to entrust businesses to relatives or acquaintances in their absence often leads to losses and family disputes.
“There have been unfortunate cases where mismanagement of soldiers’ businesses has led to family misunderstandings, and in some cases, even tragic outcomes,” he warned.
Lt Col Tuharwe urged UPDF personnel to seek professional guidance and use WSACCO’s trusted financial services to safeguard their investments.
Maj Musime Livingstone echoed the caution, advising against venturing into business without adequate research and understanding.
“Investing in something you don’t grasp often ends in loss,” he said.
