The group was received today at Entebbe International Airport by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, who hailed President Yoweri Museveni and the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) for the swift and successful operation.

“The situation in Iran was terrifying, but we are grateful to everyone who made our evacuation possible,” said Isaac Nimwesiga, one of the returnees. Another student, Sarah Mayanja, expressed gratitude for the government’s full financial and logistical support. “We didn’t have to worry about anything. The government made sure we were secure every step of the way,” she said.

Prime Minister Nabbanja commended the President for his leadership and quick intervention. “The government took immediate action to ensure our citizens returned home safe and sound. This was possible because of President Museveni’s leadership,” she said.

She also extended special appreciation to the UPDF and Maj Gen Bob Ogik, Uganda’s Defence Attaché to Türkiye, who played a critical role in ensuring the students’ safety during the evacuation.

Maj Gen Felix Kulayigye, the Director of Defence Public Information, said the operation is a clear sign of the government’s commitment to the safety of its citizens, both at home and abroad. “This is a testimony that the government is cautious about Ugandans even when they are far away from home,” he noted.

The evacuation was the result of a coordinated effort involving the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the UPDF, and Uganda’s embassies, particularly in Iran and Türkiye. Mr. Joseph Barigye, First Secretary for Foreign Affairs, praised the teamwork behind the operation and reaffirmed the ministry’s readiness to assist any Ugandans still trapped in conflict zones.

Prime Minister Nabbanja urged any Ugandans currently in danger abroad to reach out to Uganda’s embassies or contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for assistance.

The evacuated students are expected to be reunited with their families and will receive further guidance on the way forward, especially concerning their education.
