The seat is currently held by Hon. Bashir Kazibwe Mbaziira, a fellow NUP member, setting the stage for an internal contest in one of Kampala’s most politically active constituencies.
Nyanzi, who previously vied for the Kampala Central MP seat in the 2021 elections, explained his decision to switch constituencies as a strategic move based on political dynamics and eligibility.
“We believe in the rule of law and are exercising what is available to us under the law,” he told reporters after submitting his documents. “If you want to stand for a position, you better stand where you reside or work.”
He added that there are no legal limitations to his candidacy in Kawempe South and noted that the political environment and community context played a key role in his decision to shift focus from Kampala Central to Kawempe.
Nyanzi, a founding member of NUP and elder brother to party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine), is expected to mount a serious challenge in the party primaries. His move adds intrigue to the NUP’s internal selection process, especially as multiple incumbents prepare to defend their seats amid growing interest from influential party figures.
The NUP primaries are expected to attract intense competition as the party seeks to maintain and expand its dominance in the Kampala metropolitan area during the 2026 general elections.
