The National Unity Platform (NUP) has condemned a security raid on its headquarters in Kavule, describing it as an act of intimidation, but says the incident has only strengthened the resolve of its supporters as the party records overwhelming interest from aspiring candidates ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Speaking to journalists on Friday , Harriet Chemtai, chairperson of the NUP Election Management Committee, decried Tuesday’s attack, saying it was unprovoked and unacceptable. “It is shameful that the forces who are supposed to protect us are the ones attacking us. It was not called for and was clearly aimed at intimidating our people,” she said.
Despite the raid, Chemtai revealed that the party’s ongoing countrywide candidate expression of interest exercise has gained momentum. “The numbers are overwhelming. This is the seventh day of the exercise, and we are now heading into the final week,” she said, noting that the same activity is being carried out in sub-regional offices across the country.
Chemtai credited the surge in turnout to the resilience of Ugandans who are eager to usher in new leadership. “The raid didn’t scare our members; it energized them. We’ve seen more people coming forward since the attack. That shows how determined Ugandans are to take part in change.”
She added that while the party was yet to compile final figures, the volume of aspiring candidates was “too large to handle at just the headquarters and sub-regional offices alone.” NUP is expected to release a full report on the turnout once the exercise closes next week.
Chemtai also urged those who may have been frightened by the raid to remain strong and participate. “We still encourage our members out there to come. We are grateful for the courage and commitment they continue to show.”

Additionally Chemtai expressed confidence in the party’s prospects in the 2026 elections. “Ugandans are willing and ready to move into a new Uganda under the able leadership of our one and only president, Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu,” she said.
The expression of interest exercise, which began on June 1, is scheduled to conclude next week.
