Prof. Kikafunda, who is based at the Uganda High Commission in New Delhi, India, was accompanied by Counsellor Mwanika Brian Phenox for the June 12 ceremony in Malé. She conveyed greetings from President Yoweri Museveni and reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to enhancing cooperation in trade, tourism, and multilateral diplomacy.
During the meeting, Prof. Kikafunda thanked the Maldives for participating in Uganda-hosted international summits earlier this year and proposed new partnerships in tourism, visa exemptions for official passport holders, and formal foreign office consultations.
While Uganda and Maldives have enjoyed cordial relations since 1993, trade volumes remain modest standing at only USD 422,000. The High Commissioner pledged to champion private and public sector efforts to grow this figure, particularly by drawing on the Maldives’ strong tourism industry to support Uganda’s own ambitions in the sector.
President Muizzu welcomed Uganda’s overtures and praised its leadership in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the G77. He confirmed that the Maldives looks forward to deeper cooperation, especially in business and people-to-people exchanges.
