NRM Artists Launch Drive to Compose Official Party Anthem

The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) is set to get an official party anthem, as part of a broader plan by a newly formed group of musicians who have united to promote government programs through music, drama and art.

The announcement was made during the launch of the Movement Combined Artistes Association, a new umbrella body for musicians aligned to the NRM, which was commissioned on June 4 at the party’s headquarters in Kampala.

NRM Secretary General Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong revealed plans for a nationwide competitive search to compose a party anthem, saying the winning piece would serve as a unifying song for the party across the country.

“As a party, we don’t yet have an anthem,” Todwong said. “We are going to make it a national competition, and we shall select the best composition to become our official anthem.”

The association, chaired by popular artist Emma Nsereko a.k.a. Munamasaka, is intended to become a creative force for mass mobilisation, particularly among the youth. Munamasaka said the group is committed to using music as a tool to demystify government programs and communicate NRM’s achievements to ordinary citizens.

Todwong emphasised the role of music in simplifying complex policy documents. “Sometimes we write things in English that many Ugandans don’t understand, but when you sing about peace, development and transformation, everyone gets the message,” he said.

NRM Director for Information and Public Relations, Hon. Emmanuel Dombo, said the group offers the party a structured way to collaborate with artists and reach a wider audience using relatable language and creative content.

“We now have a network through which we can coordinate without friction and translate our message through music, art and social media,” Dombo said, calling on the association’s leadership to prioritise transparency and unity.

Dombo also acknowledged past friction within similar groups due to financial mismanagement and internal wrangles, cautioning the new association to avoid similar pitfalls.

He urged the artists to support the party’s outreach and development goals by producing content that informs, inspires, and unites citizens around national priorities.

The association’s launch signals a new chapter in the NRM’s political communication strategy, tapping into music’s emotional power to bridge the gap between policy and people, particularly ahead of the 2026 elections.
