The Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, Luke Oweyesigire, told journalists at Central Police Station that the over 100 arrests stemmed from a range of offenses reported during the annual pilgrimage to Namugongo one of the country’s largest religious gatherings. Despite the number, police said the 2025 event registered fewer incidents compared to previous years.

Among the crimes reported were 81 cases of phone theft. Of these, 16 phones were recovered and six suspects were apprehended. Police also handled 24 cases of stolen bags, managing to recover 15, though no arrests were made for the latter.
Two people were arrested for being in possession of counterfeit Ugandan currency, while another suspect was found vending fake pilgrimage certificates allegedly from Lugazi Diocese. Additionally, three suspects were detained for unknowingly possessing government stores, including one who had live ammunition.
In a disturbing incident, a man was arrested after he allegedly attempted to rape a woman while she was showering. The would-be victim did not file a formal complaint, but police collected statements from witnesses and are consulting with the Resident State Attorney on the appropriate charges.
Officers also dealt with seven cases of cash theft, with two suspects arrested, and two separate incidents of suspects found with suspected stolen mobile phones. Four people were apprehended in connection with the latter.
Oweyesigire also revealed that eight cases of common assault were registered, leading to the arrest of 76 individuals. He said authorities were currently sorting through the 96 total suspects to determine who would be charged, released on bond, or freed unconditionally.

Despite the crime reports, police described the overall security operation as a success, especially in comparison to previous years. “There were fewer serious incidents this time. The event went on smoothly, and we thank the officers and the public for their cooperation,” Oweyesigire said.
He urged the public to continue heeding police guidance during major events and commended the vigilance that helped ensure a peaceful commemoration.
