President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is set to award 50 Ugandans with national medals during this year’s Heroes Day celebrations, slated for Monday, June 9, 2025, in Lyantonde District.
The awards will recognize individuals both living and deceased for their outstanding service, bravery, and self-sacrifice in shaping the nation’s destiny, particularly during the 1981–86 liberation struggle.

The event, to be held at Lyantonde Technical Institute in Kaaliro Town Council, will run under the theme: “The Legacy and Ideals of Our Heroes: A Memorable Inspiration.” President Museveni will preside over the national ceremony, which will attract dignitaries from across Uganda and beyond.
Announcing the celebration, the Minister for the Presidency, Hon. Babirye Milly Babalanda, described the annual event as a time to honor the memory and contribution of those who gave everything to secure Uganda’s peace and independence.
“These 50 medals are not just symbolic tokens they represent the blood, sweat, and sacrifices of men and women who chose country above self,” Minister Babalanda said in a statement on Tuesday.
She explained that Lyantonde was chosen as the host district this year because of its significant role in supporting the NRA liberation war. The area served as a corridor for the movement of recruits and supplies, while many local families supported the fighters materially and morally.
“Lyantonde District was not only a passage for NRA troops but also a community that produced fighters and collaborators who risked everything to see Uganda free,” she noted.
Among the notable figures from the region recognised for their contributions are the late Lt. Gen. Pecos Kutesa, Capt. Ben Muhanguzi, Brig. Gen. Eugene Sebugwawo, and several civilians who provided intelligence, food, and shelter to the bush war fighters.
The celebrations will also highlight the socio-economic transformation of Lyantonde, which has become a model farming district in line with President Museveni’s wealth creation campaign. The district has also remained politically loyal to the ruling NRM, consistently delivering landslide support in every general election.
Ahead of the national event, a free medical camp was held at Lyantonde Technical Institute from May 28 to 30, offering healthcare to residents, with a focus on emergency cases, pregnant women, and children.
Minister Babalanda used the occasion to salute President Museveni for his lifelong commitment to national liberation and unity.
“As we honour our heroes, we must also recognise General Yoweri Museveni, who sacrificed his youth for Uganda’s freedom and continues to champion its transformation,” she said.

“I wish all Ugandans a remarkable 36th Heroes Day celebration,” Babalanda concluded. “Let us walk together, honour our past, and build a brighter future.”
