The operation, confirmed in a statement by Colonel Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information, was conducted following credible intelligence about a potential threat to national security during one of Uganda’s most significant religious observances.
“Two armed terrorists were intercepted and neutralized by our team in Munyonyo. The operation was intelligence-led, and it was executed to prevent disruption of the Martyrs Day celebrations,” Col. Magezi said.
According to Col. Magezi, “One of the terrorists, female, was a suicide bomber laden with powerful explosives.”
The incident comes just hours after a suspected bomb explosion was reported near the Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine, which, along with Namugongo, is a focal point for this year’s commemorations. Security agencies have since heightened surveillance and deployment around key religious sites, including the Namugongo Catholic and Anglican shrines, where thousands of pilgrims have gathered to honor the legacy of Uganda’s Christian martyrs.
The military has not released the identities of the deceased suspects, and investigations into their affiliations are ongoing. However, Col. Magezi assured the public that the UPDF and other security agencies remain on high alert.
