Todwong Welcomes NUP’s Ex-MAK Guild President Dangote to NRM

Former Makerere University Guild President Lawrence Alionzi, popularly known as “Dangote,” has officially crossed from the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), in a move hailed by party leaders as a boost to youth participation in national politics.

Alionzi, who recently declared his bid to contest for the position of Arua City Mayor, was formally welcomed to the NRM by party Secretary General Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong at the NRM Secretariat in Kampala. He was accompanied by several youth leaders who also abandoned the opposition, citing a lack of ideological clarity and strategic direction.

“It is very humbling to see young and educated people join the NRM. The movement is not something to joke about, but it is permanent. It began with our grandfathers, moved to us, and it is time for us to pass it on to you, our children,” Todwong said during the meeting.

The Secretary General emphasized that the NRM is open to all Ugandans, especially the youth, who are willing to make constructive contributions to national development through strategic leadership and grounded political ideology.

Alionzi, who served as the 88th Guild President of Makerere University on the NUP ticket, described his decision as a calculated step to transition from commentary to action in the national political arena.

“There are three kinds of people in politics: spectators, commentators, and actors. I have chosen to be an actor,” Alionzi said after picking nomination forms to run for Arua City Mayor. “The struggle is not against individuals but against poverty and illiteracy. I believe my contribution will be more meaningful under the mighty NRM movement.”

The Director of Finance and Administration at the NRM Secretariat, Hajjat Medina Naham, was also in attendance and applauded the incoming members for making what she called “a bold and visionary move.”
