In anticipation of massive crowds expected to attend the 2025 Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations at Namugongo, police have released a comprehensive traffic management plan to ensure safety, order and smooth flow of both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
According to the new guidelines, a significant portion of the area surrounding Namugongo Basilica will be closed off to vehicular movement and designated as “Pedestrians Only.” Several roads leading directly to the Basilica including stretches of Nganda Road, Yusuf Mugwerwa Road, and St. Kizito Lwanga Road will be restricted, with barricades set up to guide access and restrict entry.

General Public Access:
- From the Naalya Interchange, general traffic will be directed to Hill Side Primary School and Vienna College for parking. Vienna College is specifically reserved for foreign pilgrims.
- Kira Town Council Playgrounds, Mayor’s Gardens, and Church Farm will serve as the primary general parking areas.
- Restricted Roads: Access to key sections of the inner Namugongo area will be blocked off with barricades, and police have urged motorists to adhere strictly to posted instructions to avoid disruptions.
Authorities have assured the public of heightened security and support throughout the pilgrimage:
- Police tents including CID, Family and Child Protection, and Medical Assistance Units will be stationed in and around the pilgrimage site.
- Pilgrims are urged to cooperate with all security personnel, including those in black, camouflage (Maduadoa), and UPDF uniforms, and to report any suspicious activity immediately.
Speaking at a recent briefing, AIGP Ubaldo Bamunoba, the Chief Political Commissar of the Uganda Police Force, emphasized the importance of public cooperation during the celebrations.
“We are deployed to protect you and your property,” said Bamunoba. “If you see anything unusual or suspicious, report it immediately to the nearest officer. Your vigilance is our best weapon against crime.”
