Tragedy struck Balawoli Primary School in Kamuli District on Sunday night when a fire broke out in the boys’ dormitory, claiming the life of a 12-year-old pupil and destroying property worth millions.
The deceased, identified as Famba Bernard, was a Primary Five pupil and the son of the school matron. According to a statement issued by ASP Micheal Kasadha, the Busoga North Regional Police Spokesperson, the fire broke out at around 11:00 p.m. on May 25, reducing the dormitory to ashes and destroying mattresses, scholastic materials, and personal belongings.

Preliminary investigations suggest the cause of the fire may have been an electrical short circuit, although police say inquiries are ongoing to establish the exact cause.
“At the time of the fire outbreak, the deceased was asleep,” said ASP Kasadha. “His two siblings rushed to alert their mother—the school matron—who was stationed at the girls’ wing, approximately 70 metres away. Unfortunately, by the time help arrived, the fire had intensified, trapping Bernard inside the dormitory.”
A team of officers from the Kamuli District Police Command responded promptly and managed to save some property, but it was too late to rescue the young pupil. His body was recovered from the scene and transported to Kamuli General Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
