Bobi Wine Defends German Ambassador From Rebel Allegations

National Unity platform president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has accused the Ugandan government of orchestrating false claims against German Ambassador Matthias Schauer in retaliation for raising concerns over human rights abuses in Uganda.

In a social media post via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Bobi Wine condemned what he described as a calculated smear campaign by the regime to silence international and domestic critics. He said the accusations linking Ambassador Schauer to rebel groups were made just hours after a high-level meeting between European Union diplomats and Gen. Salim Saleh, President Museveni’s brother, in Gulu.

“During a meeting this Wednesday in Gulu, the German Ambassador and other EU officials expressed deep concern over the inflammatory social media posts made by Museveni’s brutal son,” Bobi Wine wrote, referring to Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba. “Just hours later, the regime retaliated by accusing Ambassador Schauer of sponsoring rebel groups.”

On Friday 23rd May, the UPDF issued a strongly worded statement accusing unnamed European diplomatic missions specifically singling out Ambassador Schauer of involvement in subversive activities aimed at destabilizing Uganda. The state claims to have uncovered links between some alleged rebel suspects and the National Unity Platform (NUP), Uganda’s leading opposition party led by Bobi Wine.

Bobi Wine rejected the claims as “an all-too-familiar script” used by the regime to deflect accountability and target critics.

“It is the same script the regime uses to rationalize the abduction, torture, and disappearance of our comrades,” he said. “They falsely accuse them of being criminals in an attempt to silence and intimidate us.”

He further argued that these tactics are designed to justify violent crackdowns on opposition voices while painting the government as a victim of foreign-backed conspiracies.

The EU and several Western diplomats, including Ambassador Schauer, have in recent months expressed concern over Uganda’s deteriorating human rights situation, especially after security agencies cracked down on opposition meetings, activists, and journalists. The most recent friction followed a visit by EU envoys to the NUP headquarters, during which CDF Gen Muhoozi also president Museveni’s son, made veiled threats against diplomats who engage with the opposition.

Bobi Wine called on the international community to recognize what he described as deliberate attempts to delegitimize opposition voices and to continue holding the Ugandan government accountable for “its transgressions against the people of Uganda and humanity as a whole.”

“The well-meaning people of Uganda will not be cowed into silence,” he said, vowing to continue pursuing “all lawful means to put an end to the regime of blood and shame.”

As of press time, the German Embassy had not issued a response to the allegations, and the Ugandan government had not provided further evidence to support its claims of foreign involvement in alleged rebel activity.
