A Commuter bus dangerously overloaded with passengers hanging from its windows and roof has been impounded by traffic police following public outcry sparked by a viral video posted on social media.

The bus, registration number UAY 071D, was seized at Njeru Police Station after footage shared on various social media platforms, especially X (formerly Twitter) drew widespread concern.
The video showed two packed buses heading towards eastern Uganda with passengers clinging precariously to the moving vehicle.
In response, Uganda Police confirmed the impoundment of the vehicle and the arrest of its driver, who now faces charges of transporting passengers in an unsafe and dangerous manner. Police say the suspect will appear in court on Monday, May 19.
“We urge all motorists to strictly observe traffic laws and regulations, knowing that responsible citizens as well as traffic police are actively monitoring our roads.”

The incident highlights growing public concern over reckless road behavior, especially involving public transport. In recent days, Uganda has recorded numerous road fatalities linked not only to mechanical failures but also to human negligence and overloading.
Police have urged the public to continue reporting such violations, emphasizing that road safety is a shared responsibility. “Every life matters. Let us all play our part in ensuring safer journeys for every Ugandan,” the police statement concluded.
