The Ssezibwa Region Police Spokesperson, Ms Hellen Butoto, confirmed on Tuesday morning that three people were burnt beyond recognition in the inferno. “The unidentified bodies have been taken to Kawolo General Hospital mortuary as investigations into their identities continue,” she said.

Ms Butoto added that confirming the exact number of fatalities has been difficult as detectives are still cross-checking with the bus company to establish how many passengers were on board. The 30 injured passengers, including 10 adult males, 14 adult females, 2 male juveniles, and 4 female juveniles, are receiving treatment at Kawolo General Hospital and St. Charles Lwanga Hospital in Buikwe District.

The Katosi-Nyenga Road, originally constructed as an alternative route to ease traffic between Kampala and Jinja, has become a notorious accident hotspot due to its narrow lanes and increasing traffic volume. Residents say congestion from heavy trucks and inadequate safety measures have made it dangerous for motorists.

Mr Moses Katongole, a resident in the area, criticised the road’s poor planning, calling for expansion, especially around trading centres. “We need speed humps, proper signage, and wider roads to avoid more tragedies,” he said.

Another local boda boda rider, Mr Rashid Kazibwe, blamed the narrowness of the road on the government’s failure to compensate landowners for road expansion. “Unlike in other areas, land acquisition here has stalled, leaving the road too narrow for the traffic it now handles,” he added.

Authorities say investigations into the crash are ongoing, and the final death toll may rise as more information becomes available
