“I was Electrocuted Five Times A day Since My Arrest,” Eddie Mutwe Tells Lawyer

Edward Ssebuufu, better known as Eddie Mutwe, the chief bodyguard to opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), was finally produced before the Masaka Chief Magistrate’s Court on Friday, a week after his controversial abduction in Mukono District. His lawyer has described the legal proceedings and the victim’s condition as appalling.

Ssebuufu, who had been missing since April 27, was delivered by unidentified security operatives and arraigned before Grade One Magistrate Abudalla Kaiza. According to his legal counsel, Magellan Kazibwe, the bodyguard faces charges of simple and aggravated robbery allegations also levelled against fellow collegues of Bobi wines security detail Achileo Kivumbi, WaKabi and Gadhafi who are currently on remand. The cases are allegedly stemming from an incident in Manja Village, Lwengo District.

Kazibwe said access to the court was initially denied, with security officers claiming they were awaiting instructions “from superiors in Kampala” to allow lawyers to represent the accused. “It was very pathetic and very annoying,” he said, noting that they were only allowed in after intervention from the Uganda Law Society leadership.

Inside the courtroom, Kazibwe described the scene as harrowing. “Ssebuufu is in great pain. He told us he was tortured every single day in detention, sometimes five times a day,” the lawyer revealed. “He was beaten using electric wires, solid objects like doors, electrocuted, and even physically abused in his private parts.”

Ssebuufu reportedly has not received any medical attention since his detention and was denied communication with family. His lawyer said he has not eaten adequately and is in visibly deteriorating health.

Following a request from the defense, Magistrate Kaiza granted permission for Ssebuufu to receive urgent medical treatment at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital. Counsel Kazibwe revealed that Efforts were underway to coordinate with prison authorities to facilitate the transfer.

The Uganda Human Rights Commission last week on Friday issued a formal order calling for Ssebuufu’s immediate release from illegal custody.

As of now, no government agency has publicly addressed the allegations of torture or clarified why the accused was held without access to legal representation or medical care.
