By Prominent businessman Rajiv Ruparelia, son of city tycoon Sudhir Ruparelia, has died following a tragic motor vehicle accident that occurred in the early hours of Saturday, May 3, 2025.
The fatal crash happened at approximately 1:54 a.m. at the Busabala Flyover traffic lights in Makindye-Ssabagabo, Wakiso District. According to a statement issued by the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, the incident involved a Nissan GTR sports car with registration number UAT 638L, which was traveling from Kajjansi toward Munyonyo.

Preliminary police findings suggest that Mr. Ruparelia lost control of the vehicle after colliding with temporary pavement barriers placed at the roundabout section of the flyover. The high-performance vehicle overturned and caught fire immediately, killing him on the spot.
Mr. Rajiv Ruparelia, a key figure in the Ruparelia Group and an influential player in Uganda’s real estate and hospitality sectors, was alone in the vehicle at the time of the crash. His death marks a significant loss to the business community and has sent shockwaves across the country.
Police say investigations into the exact cause of the accident are ongoing. Authorities have pledged to provide further updates as more information becomes available.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” said SP Kananura Michael, the Chief Liaison Officer at the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety.
The tragic incident comes amid growing concerns over road safety in Uganda. According to the 2024 Annual Traffic Report by the Uganda Police Force, a total of 22,378 road crashes were registered across the country last year. Out of these, 3,901 were fatal, claiming 4,806 lives, while 12,487 people sustained serious injuries.

Human error, including reckless driving, speeding, and driving under the influence, remains the leading cause of accidents, accounting for over 80% of all road crashes recorded.
The Traffic Directorate continues to urge motorists to exercise caution, observe speed limits, and respect road signs, especially around construction zones and temporary traffic installations.
