The Chairperson of Busia District Local Council V (LC5), Stephen Mugeni Wasike, has been formally charged with theft and remanded to prison, following allegations that he stole crucial parts from a government-owned vehicle.
Wasike appeared before the Busia Chief Magistrate’s Court earlier yesterday, where he was charged with Stealing from a Motor Vehicle, contrary to the Penal Code Act. The charge stems from an incident that occurred on March 8, 2025, at the Busia District Local Government parking yard.

According to the prosecution, Wasike unlawfully removed and took away an engine and a gearbox from a Toyota Hilux double cabin vehicle, registration number UAK 827Z, which is the property of the Busia District Local Government. The stolen parts are valued at approximately UGX 30 million.
The arrest and arraignment were carried out by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit in coordination with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

Following the court session, the Chief Magistrate ordered that Wasike be remanded to custody until May 8, 2025, when the case will return to court for further proceedings.
This case marks another significant step in the ongoing nationwide crackdown on corruption and abuse of public office, led by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.
