The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has raised alarm over what it describes as widespread irregularities in Uganda’s ongoing voter register update exercise, warning that the process poses a grave threat to the credibility of the 2026 general elections.

Speaking to journalists at Parliament, FDC’s party whip, Yusuf Nsibambi, strongly criticized the Electoral Commission (EC), accusing it of overseeing a flawed and discriminatory exercise. He highlighted the removal of more than 620 polling stations across the country, cautioning that such omissions could deny thousands of citizens their right to vote.
According to the FDC, the voter register is being manipulated in favor of certain political interests. Nsibambi alleged that some areas are experiencing suspicious increases in registered voters, while individuals known to support the opposition are reportedly being deleted from the register or relocated without consent.
“This is not a minor issue. It strikes at the heart of democratic participation,” Nsibambi stated, emphasizing the need for urgent intervention to safeguard electoral inclusivity. “We have credible reports showing that our supporters are being deliberately erased from the system,” he noted.

Nsibambi also condemned what he described as a wave of intimidation against activists and citizens who challenge the integrity of the process. Nsibambi accused security forces of targeting individuals who raise concerns, calling such actions a violation of democratic rights. FDC is now appealing to civil society groups, religious institutions, and the international community to closely monitor the electoral preparations from the outset.
“We are sounding the alarm early,” Nsibambi concluded. “This is not about politics it’s about protecting the right of every Ugandan to vote in a free and fair election.”
