Nomination Fee Hike Sparks Storm In Democratic Party Ahead Of Delegates Conference

A sharp increase in nomination fees for presidential aspirants in the Democratic Party (DP) has triggered a wave of discontent, with senior party leaders accusing the Secretary-General, Dr. Gerald Siranda, of overstepping his mandate ahead of the National Delegates Conference.

According to a letter addressed to Dr. Siranda by the party’s Vice President for Northern Uganda and presidential hopeful, Alitia Elia, the newly announced fee of UGX 10 million for presidential candidates  up from the previously approved UGX 5 million lacks the necessary approval from the National Executive Committee NEC, the party’s top decision-making organ.

“This creates unfairness and deprives interested leaders from aspiring for leadership,” Elia wrote. “There has never been a formal NEC meeting to cause these amendments. Whose SG are you?”

The letter, widely circulated among top DP organs, accuses the Secretary General of unilaterally altering key processes, including election fees, timelines, and supervisory roles, without consulting or securing endorsement from NEC.

Elia, who is also contesting for the party presidency, demanded an immediate halt to the National Delegates Conference preparations, citing concerns of transparency, conflict of interest, and the absence of NEC-sanctioned election guidelines.

“How can someone who is also a candidate appoint the committee overseeing the elections?” Elia asked. “This undermines the credibility of the process.”

He also questioned claims by Dr. Siranda that 80% of delegates had already been profiled, despite many districts still struggling to complete lower-level party elections due to logistical and financial constraints.
