While addressing the press at the party headquarters at uganda house, UPC Spokeswoman Arach Oyat Sharon highlighted Pope Francis’s commitment to environmental protection. She noted that the Pope was deeply concerned about the impact of climate change on humanity and the need to promote sustainable practices.

“Pope Francis was a great environmentalist who emphasized the importance of utilizing our natural environment and its resources sustainably,” Sharon said. “Climate change directly threatens humanity, and we need to produce enough food for the global population while promoting proper farming practices and using friendly sources of energy like solar energy and hydroelectric power.”

The UPC called for immediate action to protect the environment, citing the threats faced by vital ecosystems like the Amazon forest, Congo forest, and Mabira forest in Uganda. The party urged the government to prioritize re-afforestation efforts and promote sustainable energy sources.

“We reiterate our call to Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) to make electricity cheaper and more affordable to all Ugandans as a viable alternative to charcoal and firewood,” Sharon added.

The party also praised Pope Francis’s commitment to reconciliation, dialogue, and protecting the vulnerable. “Pope Francis exhibited the power of reconciliation, which would lead to true dialogue as we put an end to violence in all its forms,” Sharon said. “He worked towards the protection of refugees and reaching out to those living on the margins of our society while encouraging the poor to have a special position in the church.”
