“Happy birthday @kizzabesigye1, my dearest friend and partner for the last 32 years!” Byanyima wrote. “You are 69 today. What a life of courage, conviction, and sacrifice you have lived! Fighting for justice, freedom, and dignity for all Ugandans. I’m proud to walk with you.”
The message shared on her social media platforms, has resonated widely across political and activist circles, drawing praise for its emotional depth and the tribute it pays to a man often seen as the face of Uganda’s democratic struggle.
Besigye, a retired colonel, medical doctor, and former personal physician to President Yoweri Museveni, broke ranks with the ruling establishment in the late 1990s to lead a spirited opposition movement. Since then, he has weathered arrests, detentions, house arrests, and numerous charges in his pursuit of political reform and human rights in Uganda.
Byanyima, currently Executive Director of UNAIDS, closed her message with a powerful nod to their shared struggle: “Here’s to love, purpose, and the difficult road ahead. We shall overcome!”
