Emergency response teams rushed the injured to various health facilities for medical treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to Hoima City Mortuary for postmortem examinations.
Preliminary investigations suggest that mechanical failure may have played a role in the crash, but authorities say inquiries are still ongoing to establish the exact cause of the tragedy.
The Police have expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
In his statement, SP Kananura issued a strong warning to truck drivers and transporters:
“We strongly urge all truck drivers and transporters to refrain from carrying passengers on top or in the back of trucks. These vehicles are not designed for human transportation.”
He also emphasized the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and urged drivers to be especially cautious on hilly or dangerous road sections.
This latest accident adds to growing concerns over the safety of transporting people using cargo vehicles, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas where public transport alternatives are limited.
Authorities have pledged to intensify enforcement of traffic laws and crack down on transporters who endanger lives through unsafe practices.
