The Uganda Police Force has arrested at least 16 suspects in connection with a series of violent incidents linked to the ongoing National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries across three districts: Mubende, Isingiro and Rubanda.
According to a statement released on Tuesday by Police Headquarters in Kampala, the violent clashes involved rival political groups and supporters, leading to injuries, destruction of property, and the torching of vehicles and motorcycles.

In Mubende District, chaos broke out on July 7 when supporters of two NRM parliamentary candidates Mr. Muhumuza Henry and Hon. Kabanda David clashed at Kyapa Kyeturege Trading Centre. A physical altercation escalated into a gunfire exchange, leaving one Gumisiriza Roger injured. Additional violence erupted at Nabingola Sub-County headquarters, where two vehicles and a motorcycle were set ablaze. Three suspects have been arrested so far in relation to the incident, and police say investigations are ongoing.
In Isingiro District, police reported that a group set fire to two motorcycles and a vehicle in Kyempisi Cell, Kikagate Sub-county, on July 5. Ten suspects were arrested, and several others remain on the run. A security meeting was held on July 7 with NRM electoral officials and other stakeholders to promote calm during the primaries.
Meanwhile, in Rubanda District, violence broke out on July 3 at Hakashanje Playground in Hamuhambo Town Council. Stones were thrown at the convoy of State Minister for Finance, Hon. Henry Musasizi, damaging his vehicle as he left a campaign event. Earlier that day, his campaign posters were allegedly destroyed by rival supporters. Two suspects have since been detained.
Police condemned the acts of violence and reassured the public that all perpetrators will be brought to justice. “The Uganda Police Force remains dedicated to maintaining peace and ensuring a secure electoral process,” the statement read.
Authorities have urged political actors and their supporters to exercise restraint and allow lawful processes to take their course. Investigations and operations to track down remaining suspects are ongoing.
