Peoples Front for Freedom PFF leaders have dismissed Uganda’s official Heroes Day celebrations as a “festival of counterfeit heroes” and instead praised opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye, who they described as the true embodiment of courage, sacrifice, and patriotism.

Speaking to journalists during a media address at party offices on Katonga road PFF spokesperson Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda and party stalwart Salaam Musumba used the occasion of Heroes Day to remind the nation of Besigye’s lifelong sacrifice for Uganda.
“While the Museveni regime parades counterfeit heroes in Lyantonde, a real hero Dr. Kizza Besigye remains imprisoned here in Luzira,” said Ssemujju. “He left a lucrative medical career in Nairobi to join the 1981–86 Bush War and fight for justice. Today, he is being punished for still believing in those ideals.”
Semujju described Dr. Besigye as a man who has consistently chosen the harder path, drawing comparisons between his political persecution and the biblical suffering of Jesus. “He is not just in Luzira. He is held in a prison within a prison an isolated colonial-era cell once used for hardcore criminals,” she said, after visiting Besigye in detention along with other party members.
The PFF leaders said Besigye’s continued imprisonment without trial stands in stark contrast to those being honored at the official Heroes Day celebrations. “He’s 69 years old and still fighting for a better Uganda. Meanwhile, people who know nothing about the struggle are being given medals for achievements they cannot even explain,” Ssemujju charged.
Musumba recalled a conversation with Besigye in which he remained calm and hopeful despite his confinement. “He welcomed us with a smile. His spirit is unbroken,” she said.
Besigye, a former presidential candidate and veteran opposition figure, has been arrested numerous times over the past two decades for leading protests and challenging President Yoweri Museveni’s rule. His current detention stems from charges related to treason charges, but his supporters believe it is politically motivated.

As the country marked 36 years of Heroes Day with ceremonies in Lyantonde District, PPF leaders urged Ugandans to reflect on the meaning of heroism and reject what they called the “state-sponsored rewriting of history.”
“Our true heroes are not those wearing medals today, but those paying the price for truth and justice. Dr. Kizza Besigye is the hero Uganda should be celebrating,” Ssemujju said.
