Security Operatives Hunt For Nyanzi’s Twin Sons, Intimidate Relatives In Uganda

Exiled Ugandan academic and political activist Dr. Stella Nyanzi has accused Ugandan security agencies of harassing her family and close friends in a search for her twin sons, in what she believes is a coordinated effort to intimidate her and undermine her political dissent.

In a strongly worded message posted on her social media, Dr. Nyanzi said that armed men identifying themselves as Uganda Police personnel visited homes in Kitukutwe, Bulindo, Masaka, Najjeera, and Entebbe, asking for her twin sons Wasswa and Kato by name. The individuals reportedly did not present arrest warrants or official documentation, raising alarm among her family and allies.

“Shame on dictator Museveni’s police for trying to intimidate my close friends. We see through your nonsense,” she wrote.

The controversial scholar and activist, known for her vocal criticism of the Ugandan government, linked the targeted visits to broader state surveillance and repression against opposition figures. The visits come at a time when Nyanzi is already facing her own crisis being stranded in Nairobi despite holding valid refugee documents from Germany.

Dr. Nyanzi, who was granted asylum in Germany following her incarceration in Uganda, claims she was denied boarding a flight back to Germany over the weekend. Despite holding the correct documentation, she was informed at the German embassy in Nairobi that she lacked permission to re-enter Germany, even though she has formal permission to stay.

“Why do refugees need a visa to return to their country of refuge? If I am a refugee, am I still a human being?” she asked, visibly distressed over what she called “dehumanising” treatment from German immigration authorities.

Her lawyer, who accompanied her to the embassy, raised urgent concerns about her safety in Nairobi citing the past abductions of Ugandan dissidents such as Dr. Kizza Besigye and dozens of FDC members in the region. Despite assurances from embassy officials and the Foreigners’ Office in Munich confirming her refugee status, she was told she must wait for a visa decision while remaining in Nairobi.

As Dr. Nyanzi spends a fourth night in Nairobi, uncertain and vulnerable, she says she feels abandoned by the very systems meant to protect refugees.

“My children are wondering why their mother remains stranded and exposed to dictator Museveni’s mechanisations in East Africa,” she said. “The German system says I belong, yet won’t let me back into my place of refuge.”

As of publication, neither the Uganda Police Force nor the German authorities had responded publicly to Nyanzi’s allegations.
