Atuhaire was arrested in Dar es Salaam alongside Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi while attending the court hearing of Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu, who faces treason charges. Mwangi, released earlier at the Kenyan border, reported that both were subjected to torture under orders from a Tanzanian state security official, including being taken to a secret location.
The detentions have drawn international concern, highlighting a growing crackdown on dissent in Tanzania. President Samia Suluhu Hassan, while pledging to uphold human rights, has warned foreign activists against interfering in Tanzanian affairs.
Agather Atuhaire, known for her investigative journalism and legal advocacy, has received international recognition for her work. She was awarded the European Union Human Rights Defenders Award in 2023 and the U.S. State Department’s International Women of Courage Award in 2024.
