By The Uganda Medical Association (UMA) has confirmed harrowing signs of torture on Eddie Mutwe, the lead bodyguard of National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi, following a medical assessment conducted this week at Masaka Central Prison.
In a report released Friday evening, UMA detailed the findings of their visit on May 7, 2025, which included severe visible injuries and psychological trauma. According to the report, Eddie Mutwe, whose full name is Ssebuufu Edward, exhibited open wounds, swollen limbs, bruises, and healing scars consistent with physical abuse.

“He was carried into the visitors’ room by fellow inmates due to injuries and immense pain,” read part of the statement signed by Dr. Mirembe Joel, UMA Secretary General.
The medical team noted that Eddie Mutwe had been subjected to torture methods including electrocution particularly on his genitals and other sensitive areas mock executions, verbal and physical abuse, and prolonged isolation. UMA also found that Eddie Mutwe had been forcibly shaved and forbidden from speaking his native language, Luganda, during detention.
In their report, doctors condemned the denial of access to medical care and called for his immediate transfer to a specialized facility, noting that the prison’s Health Centre III is unequipped to handle his complex condition. “Eddie Mutwe urgently requires advanced medical attention which cannot be provided within the under-equipped prison facility,” UMA stated.
The association has notified its international partners in the medical diaspora to prepare for possible medical evacuation.
Citing international and local laws, including the UN Convention Against Torture and Uganda’s own constitution, UMA called the acts inflicted on Eddie Mutwe “an assault on human dignity” and “a grave violation of human rights.” The statement emphasized that the torture he endured was “cruel, inhuman, and degrading” and contravened both domestic law and global medical ethics.

UMA is urging the government to authorize an independent medical examination for all torture victims and to ensure medical treatment in detention aligns with constitutional standards. They also demanded that authorities respect legal and human rights protections during arrests and detentions.
“We stress the urgency of this matter and call on all responsible parties to prioritize the health and human rights of Eddie Mutwe and others. These are non-negotiable,” the association stated
The Uganda Human Rights Commission had previously ordered Mutwe’s release, citing illegal detention. However, that directive was not honored by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), under whose authority Eddie Mutwe was allegedly abducted and held incommunicado for days.
