FDC Kicks Off 2026 Race As Amuriat Hands Over Office, Faces Off With Nandala Mafabi

FDC Kicks Off 2026 Race As Amuriat Hands Over Office, Faces Off With Nandala Mafabi

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party president Patrick Oboi Amuriat has stepped aside from his official duties, handing over to his deputy for Northern Uganda, Hassan Kaps Fungaroo as the country’s oldest opposition party officially launches its internal electoral process for the 2026 presidential elections

Amuriat’s gesture followed his formal nomination as one of the two contenders for the FDC presidential flag bearer. The other is party Secretary General Nathan Nandala Mafabi, setting the stage for what both men have pledged will be a respectful, issue-based race.

“I have handed over responsibilities to Hon. Fungaroo to focus on this race. I am fully committed to serving the party and showing that we practice real internal democracy,” Amuriat said after his nomination, emphasizing that the party’s openness to contested leadership is a rare value in Uganda’s political landscape.

Reflecting on the turbulence of previous election cycles, Amuriat recalled his role during the difficult 2021 campaign.

“I was there when others doubted we’d even manage 1%. We stayed strong. We made sure FDC stayed alive,” he said.

He further noted that his journey alongside Mafabi had not been without challenges, but both remained loyal to the party’s cause. “We have agreed to a sober campaign. No insults, no mudslinging. Whoever wins, the other will support.”

Mafabi, who was also nominated, struck a peacemaking tone and praised Amuriat’s experience and value to the party.

“I plead with you, let me go and do the groundwork while you stay and preserve yourself for the future,” Mafabi said. “You can sacrifice me. I don’t hate anyone, and I know no boundaries.”

Chairperson of the FDC Electoral Commission Boniface Toterebuka Bamwenda who oversaw the nomination process, confirmed that both Mafabi and Amuriat had met the requirements to compete.

Speaking at the event, Deputy President Fungaroo, now acting in Amuriat’s place, expressed confidence in the party’s readiness to reclaim its footing in national politics.

“FDC staggered, but we have stabilized. What looked like a fall was us dodging a blow. Now, we are ready to lead Uganda,” Fungaroo declared.
