On the first day, four contenders Matsiko Dan, Nathan Nandala Mafabi James, Malinga Gerard, and Usaama Ssemwogerere picked their forms. The process was briefly paused on May 1 in observance of International Labour Day, before resuming on Friday, when two additional candidates, Patrick Oboi Amuriat and Bumba Ereneste, joined the race.
“The exercise has gone smoothly. The mood has been good, and the candidates have shown a lot of enthusiasm,” Toterebuka told journalists in Kampala. “We now await the return of the filled nomination forms as we move to the next phase of the process.”
The next step is the official nomination and vetting exercise, scheduled for Tuesday, May 6 or Wednesday, May 7, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. During this phase, the Electoral Commission will scrutinize each candidate’s eligibility.
Among the requirements to be verified are FDC membership status, academic qualifications (minimum A-Level or equivalent), payment of the five million shilling nomination fee, and endorsement by at least five party delegates from each of Uganda’s four geographical regions.
